The Child Garden, Geoff Ryman
A REALLY good story. Non-linear (does anyone write with linear timelines anymore?), elegantly crafted, and full of engaging characters. Interesting future-tech slipped in here and there. Bonus if you were ever a theatre-geek - this is well-rounded scifi. (With Polar Bears!)
