Timbuktu, Paul Auster
I like Paul Auster's stories; this is no exception. Short, sad, and i'm not even a hard-core dog person. Quite good.

To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee
Every bit as good now as it was 12 years ago. If you haven't read it yet, go do it. Now. The foreward in this edition is marvelous.

A Year in Provence, Peter Mayle
More enjoyable than Tuscan Sunl; maybe chattier, more amusing stories. Recommended.

Antarctica, Kim Stanley Robinson
Fast fun read. Good characterization, especially good if you already like scientist-crawling-around-wild-places stories. Recommended.

Under the Tuscan Sun, Frances Mayes
Gives a really good sense of what it's like to live day-to-day in Tuscany during the summer. Amusing, but i would have rather had less pages of it.

Cookwise: The Hows and Whys of Successful Cooking, Shirly A. Corrihur.
Same principle as McGee but focused on recipes that teach the science. I'm giving this to my brother.
