The Soul of a Chef, Michael Ruhlman
Every bit as good as The Making of a Chef. Man, can Mr. Ruhlman tell a story. Now i'm even more obsessed about a trip out to The French Laundry.

Me Talk Pretty One Day, David Sedaris
This was funny, but not nearly as funny as Naked. Easy read, though.

The Golden Compass, Phillip Pullman
This book has been mentioned to me several times, but Ian finally prompted me to pick it up. GREAT book; engaging characters, interesting universe, difficult puzzles, strong adventure. A children's book that doesn't hold your hand to make it easy, but makes it so compelling you run after it. Give it to your favorite kids!

The Kid, Dan Savage
Dan Savage is a pee-your-pants funny. His columns over the last few years haven't seemed as on as they used to be, but this book definitely puts him back in good standing. Not just funny and amusing, but genuinely good information and real-life experiences about adoption.

The Gift, Patrick O'Leary
A MUCH better story and read than Behind Door Number Three. Faerie tale rather than sci-fi, but it goes on my favorite faerie tales list. Go read it.

The Golden Globe, John Varley
Great fun. Good crossover between sci-fi and the theatre/movie community. Varley writes characters you can engage in, and twists you can laugh at. He's also succeeded as the best (in my opinion) sci-fi writer to turn gender-changing and the various sexual preferences/identifications that go along with it into something realistic, non-phobic, and just part of the story. Recommended!
