survival kit

I'll be spending 2-3 days in a hotel room near UCLA in a couple of weeks. I'll be helping take care of my mom, who will likely be cranky, sleep a lot, and need me nearby. Lots of hotel-room-time. What to bring to keep myself sane?

1. Reasonably healthy & tasty snacks.
2. A bottle of good wine for my bar fridge.
3. Laptop. Airport. iPod.
4. Lightweight, trashy books.
5. Stephenson's QuicksilveR
6. My journal, and notecards.
7. Jimmy, my teddy bear.
8. Bathbombs. Maybe a travel candle.

Other suggestions?

Maybe some e.e. cummings - a newish copy perhaps that's more travel-worthy than your old beloved.

Oh, and a Russell would probably be nice too. You might need a larger duffle bag for him.

Dood! When will you be down here? I'm not so far from UCLA; we should totally hang out!

You need books. What do you like to read? Do you like dark humor? My favorite of the stack I bought for honeymoon reading is Kate Christensen's "The Epicure's Lament" (http://www.powells.com/review/2004_04_09.html) and I would be happy to lend you my copy if you want.

I like to travel with DVDs of TV shows. They're distracting but not as engrossing as movies so it's easier to put them down and tend to real life.

Food porn. Kitchen porn. Use the time to plan stuff, dream stuff.
