Bruised Pumpkins
Carol gave these their name at the 1997 Halloween dinner
Makes 2 pint-size servings
1 can Guinness Stout (In the can! Never in the bottle!)
1 bottle hard apple cider
red or orange food dye
These are really just Black Velvets with the cider dyed orange.
They're easier to pour than you'd think.
First, dye your cider a bright orange. (I usually do this in a
pyrex measuring cup.)
Pour your glass half-full of the cider. The trick to this pour
is to pour ever-so-slowly... you're trying to break the impact
of the guinness as it hits the cider. Position a spoon, back facing
up, so that the tip is touching the side of the glass just above
the line of the cider. Slowly pour the Guinness down the back
of the spoon (it should just be a trickle), moving the spoon's
edge slowly up as the level of beverage rises.
You can pour these in almost anything - i usually pour into pint
glasses. For an aperitif at the 2000 Halloween dinner, i poured them into champagne flutes.
